1. SUMMARY
The subject has been raised at several for a most recently at the meeting in May. The concerns were that a steeper approach angle could yield benefits in the noise climate. This paper is not prescriptive but aims to start a brief debate to share & widen awareness & knowledge of the subject.
HACAN commissioned the Aviation Environment Foundation to produce a report. Entitled ‘Approach Noise at Heathrow: Concentrating the Problem’. The report was published in March 2010, a brief summary is appended: the report is attached to the papers and the relvant apect of the feasibility of Steeper Approaches is summarised on pp20 & 21..
The report concludes that steeper angles are feasible. The perceived wisdom from within the airline industry appears to be that consistency of angles internationally is desirable from an airline safety viewpoint and that any departure from the norm could lead to confusion. It is contended that airline pilots could cope with differences, Heathrow is a major international airport which can lead on its own and that air traffic control and aircraft systems could be programmed to cope.
2 RECOMMENDATION
Members of the Forum are requested to consider the relevant aspects of the paper included with the papers which concludes that steeper angles are feasible.
