To censure the Cabinet and reject the proposed budget for 2019/20
It is our position that years of artificially reduced council
tax and austerity policies from central government have put the
Borough in its current financial position where it has to strip
£6.8 million from its spending in the next financial
year.
Instead of displaying prudence, the Council has continued to waste
residents' money on lost planning appeals; paying for legal advice
against itself when Councillors have voted in error and putting up
self-congratulatory banners on lamp posts in the Borough.
We do not believe that residents or employees should be made to
shoulder the cost of this incompetence.
We call for the full council to censure the Cabinet; reject the
proposed budget and negotiate with the full Council (as elected
representatives of residents') and the staffs’ trade unions
to find acceptable alternative measures. The cabinet is instructed
to reprioritise the budget with a stronger remit on cutting
unnecessary expenditure to mitigate against staff redundancies and
cuts to essential services.
