Reject any proposal to open public access across the designated priority habitat of the East Field at Battlemead Common
We wish to express our deep concern with a proposal being put
forward to the Battlemead Steering Group on 3 August 2021 to open a
path through the special wetland habitat area at Battlemead.
We oppose this proposal and, at this stage, this wildlife area at
Battlemead must remain closed all year round to continue to protect
the habitat and the wildlife which uses it from people and dogs. We
must give nature a chance to re-establish before public access is
increased and recognise this may take 5-10 years of sound
ecological management.
Having declared an Environmental and Climate Emergency, and adopted
a Strategy to address it, protection and enhancement of the natural
environment is a key objective of Council.
Protecting the natural environment on RBWM-owned land is paramount;
any hopes the Council have of engaging authoritatively with other
landowners to encourage biodiversity gains depend upon conformity
with their own Strategy and declaration.
If not at Battlemead, then where?
