Refuse planning permission for a Hindu Community Centre near Boulters Lock
The Council is committed to preserve and enhance the riverside
as a benefit for the people of Maidenhead. It also has a policy of
locating community centres in the middle of the town, close to
transport links.
Approving the proposed community centre would be a breach of these
commitments, and bring traffic, noise and nuisance to a residential
area next to a beauty spot. This is a wholly inappropriate
location.
Parking is a problem near Boulters Lock during the summer and at
weekends. Restrictions being introduced on roads nearby and the new
bridge across the river to Taplow will worsen this problem. A
community centre would make it worse still.
The Hindu Society claim to have only 100 members, of whom only 4-6
will use the centre at any one time. Yet they propose to spend more
than £500,000 building a centre with seating capacity of 132
and standing capacity of up to 200. We believe the actual usage
will be much higher than that stated.
Residents have made their own offer for the land. They propose to
use it for allotments, to help address a serious shortage. This
offers better value for the taxpayers of Maidenhead and is much
more in keeping with the nature and character of the area.
