Use the waste land adjoining Boulters Lock car park to extend the car park, and create much-needed extra capacity in the area
There is a shortage of car parking near Boulters Lock -
Maidenhead's main attraction for visitors and residents. The car
park is often full to bursting in the summer & at weekends
throughout the year. Pressure will increase when a footbridge is
built across the river to the new Taplow Country Park. The
introduction of residents' parking restrictions nearby has further
increased demand on capacity.
The Council owns half an acre of waste land adjoining the existing
car park, previously used as an overspill car park, but currently
fenced off. Making use of this land to extend the car park is an
obvious and sensible course of action.
Under pressure from residents, the Council agreed to conduct an
analysis of extending the car park. It took them less than two
weeks to reject the idea on cost grounds, without obtaining any
proper estimates or doing modelling based on future demand or
revenues. The councillor who made this decision later described it
as "hardly rigorous".
The council should look at this again. It has a problem with demand
for parking near Boulters Lock, and a ready-made solution staring
it in the face - a solution which offers the best outcome for the
people of Maidenhead.
