Petition for a safe crossing point on Altwood Road
This petition calls for safe crossings outside St Edmund Campion
and Altwood Secondary Schools, both in Altwood Road, Maidenhead. As
well as being needed during school pick-up and drop-off times,
which on its own would be justification enough, St Edmund Campion
Church, Parish Centre and Altwood Secondary school experience
regular use outside school hours.
Until December 2015 there had been a crossing patrol person to help
children and parents cross the road, but the council has been
unable to fill the role and the commonly used crossing point is no
longer safely patrolled.
School parents have noticed a worrying number of incidents of
dangerous driving around the school which is putting at risk the
lives of children and parents crossing the road. These events would
have been prevented, and the risk reduced, had there been a
crossing patrol present.
With ever-increasing traffic volumes and increased pupil numbers,
our schools need a safe crossing point more than ever.
We appeal to the council not just to look for the most economically
viable solution but to prioritise options that are statistically
most likely to keep children safe.
