Ensure that redevelopment plans for the York Road area include a replacement community centre
The Royal Borough Development Partnership proposals for the York
Road area will mean the closure of Maidenhead Community Centre, and
there are no proposals for any direct replacement in the
development.
Maidenhead Community Centre is volunteer-run, very friendly, and
provides for a wide range of activities for residents of all ages,
including Yoga, Martial Arts, community support groups (like Men's
Matters and Friends in Need), fitness classes, arts, historical,
music and religious groups, and a Community Cafe. It is an
important meeting place for elderly people, and also hosts craft
and social groups geared towards, and run by, older members of the
community. Many of these activities will cease, or be moved out of
the town centre, if the community centre is closed.
As more flats are built in the town centre and the number of
parking spaces per residence goes down, it makes no sense to close
community centres in the heart of the town. People who cannot
drive, or who have nowhere to park a car, need somewhere within
walking distance.
